Welcome!

Welcome to my personal web page.  My name is Gary Sutcliffe and I built this site is to showcase some of my hobbies and projects I have done. I hope you will find some of them interesting and maybe give you some ideas you can use yourself. Please let me know if you if you use the content here for your own projects.  I love hearing about other people's projects.

This web site was started in late October, 2008, and is updated as time and interesting material is available.

If you have any comments or questions about material on this web site contact me at w9xt "at" unifiedmicro "dot" com. I get about 100 spam messages a day, so be sure to put a specific subject to ensure I see your message.

Amateur Radio

I have been a ham radio operator since 1970. My current call sign is W9XT, hence the URL name for this web site. My main activities are contesting, DXing and building related electronic projects.

CW (Morse Code) is my favorite mode but I also operate SSB and the digital modes. My station covers 160M through 432 MHz.

The Amateur Radio Page has information on antennas, radio projects and related subjects.

My interest in ham radio lead to a career in electronics and I hold a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. (Go Badgers!) I have been employed in the electronics industry since 1972 and have worked on well over 150 different projects including industrial controls, scientific instrumentation, NASA spacecraft, medical devices and computers ranging from micros to mainframes.

I retired in July 2017 but still run my electronics and amateur radio company Unified Microsystems and take on occasional consulting projects.

My main professional interest is embedded systems. Embedded systems use small microcontroller ICs in dedicated applications to control, measure, monitor, or otherwise interface to the outside world.

The  Electronics Page has information on electronic projects and a tutorial series on microcontroller interfacing.

Gardening

Gardening is a great activity during the warmer months (which are painfully few here in Wisconsin). Although I have a few flower beds, my main interest is in vegetable gardening. Growing your own vegetables is a good way to get fresh produce and save hundreds of dollars on the food bill.

Check out some garden gadgets you can make and tips for more efficient gardening.

When I was about 7 years old I caught some minnows in a local stream. I kept them in a bucket until I finally persuaded my parents to get me a proper aquarium. Ever since then I have been fascinated by fish.  For the last 30 years or so I have specialized in killifish. There are over 800 killifish species world wide but you seldom see them in pet shops because they are difficult to raise on a commercial scale. This is too bad because they are among the most colorful of the fresh water fishes. My fish room currently consists of about 40 aquariums, most of which are dedicated to killies.   Check out my tips on raising live foods and some of the gadets I have made for raising fish.
